‘Warning to humanity’ now signed by 20,000 scientists.
A record number of scientists have signed a paper supporting a stark ‘warning to humanity’.
The research paper entitled “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice” was published in November last year.
The paper is designed as a warning to the human race due to our poor environmental habits.
Planet earth is heading for a serious environmental crisis, therefore scientists have warned we must change our ways.
This paper is a follow-up to the original paper, published 25 years ago. Scientists back then were worried about the state of the planet and it has only gotten worse since.
Scientists have called upon world leaders to:
“take immediate action as a moral imperative to current and future generations of human and other life.”
Business and industry currently rule the way the world works. Sadly, this has a destructive negative impact on the environment.
The paper notes:
“Especially troubling is the current trajectory of potentially catastrophic climate change”
Since the paper was released last year, a further 4,500 signatures have been added from scientists across the world.
It was initially released with around 15,000 signatures, but has now reached the 20,000 mark with signatures from across 184 countries.
Despite being one of the most widely talked about research papers of last year, it has had little impact on world leaders.
President Trump in particular has been brazen in his support of anti-environmental movements such as fracking; and pulling out of the Paris agreement.
Ecology professor William Ripple at Oregon State University said in a statement:
“Our scientists’ warning to humanity has clearly struck a chord with both the global scientific community and the public,”
Environmental issues such as fracking, recycling and the state of the worlds oceans have captured the public’s imagination, but our rulers seem unwilling to change the laws in order for a real change to be made.
The initial warning started with the poignant words:
“Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course.” and the warning that “time is running out.”
World leaders seem to like to bury their heads when it comes to important issues like these. They are the ones who recognize that we need to ‘change’ but are unwilling to chance the ways they are set in.
Each year businesses spend billions of dollars lobbying so that government decisions work in their favor. Until we see an end to lobbying from rich companies with questionable morals, no real change will ever come. Only then will the scientists warning be made a reality.
