Flu epidemic highlights flu vaccine failings.
The recent outbreak of flu has been one of the worst we have seen in recent years, and the death toll sadly has been raised because of this, 8 people in Santa Barbara died in the space of two weeks from flu.
The worrying part of this story is that seven of the eight had actually received their flu shot, so what exactly was it protecting against?
People who are more susceptible to the flu are advised to get the flu vaccine, babies, the elderly and people who suffer from asthma and breathing problems.
All 8 of the flu victims were over 65, and were presumably advised by their doctor to get the flu vaccine in order for it to protect them against the virus, but it didn’t work, why?
The flu vaccine has been criticized more and more recently as we see cases like this of the vaccine not working, and sometimes even causing more harm than good, as people have adverse reactions to the vaccine which produce worse side effects than the flu itself.
“These numbers are unprecedented for the past 10 years,”
“I’m worried about how severe our flu season will be,”
“Our numbers are in line with statewide numbers, and they’re definitely cause for concern,”
The fact that the effectiveness of the flu vaccine seems to have tapered off to the point where it has become almost useless falls in line with speculation that has suggested the flu is not something you can effectively vaccinate against.
The flu is a virus and will constantly change to suit its environment. The nature of the virus means that it can change at a quicker rate than it is possible to come up with, and effectively vaccinate whole countries against. The seven tragic flu victims had been led to believe that they had been vaccinated against this years’ flu when it is now apparent that they had not been.
Despite the questionable success rate of the flu vaccine, Dr. Dean does still recommend that those classed as vulnerable go ahead and get it.
“If your choice is between life and death or a trip to intensive care, why would you pass up that kind of protection, particularly if you’re already vulnerable?”
The companies who produce vaccine such as the flu shot have been criticized for pushing their products on doctors in order to make more money, the vaccine industry is big business and every year flu vaccines make these companies millions of dollars.
