Beekeeping just got a whole lot easier.
As with many arts and crafts in recent years, beekeeping has gained popularity and is now a hobby that many people say they have expressed interest in.
But although interesting and incredibly rewarding, beekeeping is normally out of reach of most normal people’s grasps due to kit being expensive and space-consuming.
But a team have put their heads together to create one of the most ingenious inventions we have ever seen. The BEEcosystem is an indoor bee hive which allows you to undertake beekeeping duties in the comfort of your own home.
Starting a bee colony is arguably the hardest part of beekeeping, and so this system does only allow you to transfer into it part of an existing colony, but this is easily done.
The owners say that allowing only established hives to be introduced into the BEEcosytem takes some of the stress and worry out of starting your own hive. Many established beekeepers will allow you to purchase parts of their established hives and most local areas have their own beekeeping association that allows you to do this, it means more of an incentive for people to carry on beekeeping and keeps those all important bee numbers at safe levels.
The BEEcosystem is a beautiful piece of design, hexagonal in shape to mimic the organic hive structure, the designers say it is “small enough to be manageable in non traditional beekeeping spaces,”.
The unique viewing window on the front of the hive is the distinguishing feature. The image that is naturally associated with beekeeping is the all-in-one ‘suit’ which allows the keeper to observe the bees but needs to be assured they will not be stung. The viewing window allows 24/7 access to what your hive is up to with no risk of being stung.
The hive can be used indoors or outside, and a special tube and sliding window means the bees can be placed inside without any risk of them escaping. The light inside the BEEcosystem mimics the exact light found inside organic hives and so the bees will feel right at home.
The BEEcosystem can be provided with bees already inside, so the whole thing comes as a ready made eco-system. The makers of the BEEcosystem say that while some honey will be produced, it was not made to be a ‘honey factory’ instead it was produced to bring bees and humans closer together, in an effort to boost bee-care across the world.
