Do you REALLY know whats inside your birthday cake?
Birthday cakes are served up several times a year, and if you have young children the birthday parties can really stack up throughout the months.
But every time you indulge in a slice of birthday cake you are eating up to 80 toxic ingredients, coming from the cake itself and the colored frosting which now come in a mind boggling variety of flavors.
Cake itself is not the enemy. There are numerous homemade recipes for birthday cakes that are just as delicious as the shop bought versions. It is when we tread onto ready-made cake territory that the problems begin.
Any brightly colored birthday cake that you pick up from a supermarket will no doubt contain a pretty long list of E numbers, for the flavor and the coloring. But what is usually omitted from the ingredient list is just how many of these food colourings contain aluminum.
The following E numbers are known to contain aluminum-
E173, E520, E521, E523 E541, E545, E554, E555 E556, E559.
As well as this, most shop bought cakes are made using highly processed cake mixtures, also containing aluminum.
Certain emulsifying agents contain aluminum and is it found in cake mixes, self-rising flour, prepared doughs, waffles, nondairy creamers, pickles and certain brands of baking powder.
So why should you be worried about aluminum?
Aluminum is classed as a ‘heavy metal‘ and while some is always present in the body, it is when we intake too much aluminum from our surroundings, and our food that it starts to become a problem.
Heavy metals bio-accumulate in the body, meaning once they are in there it is hard to get them out, as the body is not able to flush it out by itself.
Heavy metals such as aluminum are increasingly linked with medical conditions such as autism, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, memory problems, speech impairments and aphasia, dementia, depression, muscle weakness, motor disturbances, and other neurological problems.
Dr. Mercola writes about aluminum:
“Aluminum is to your central nervous system as cigarette smoke is to your lungs. Scientists are clear that toxic metals damage brain tissue and lead to degenerative disease by producing oxidative stress—and aluminum is one of the worst offenders.
With Alzheimer’s rates skyrocketing, today’s multiple avenues of aluminum exposure are of great concern. Just as with particles in the environment, once aluminum is in your tissues, your body has a difficult time releasing it. This toxic metal serves absolutely no biological purpose, so the less of it you ingest, the better.”
If you have an upcoming birthday and want to steer clear of the shop bought section of birthday cakes, why not bake one yourself. These days there is an abundance of natural food dyes which are just as effective as synthetic versions.
